How To Spot A Proprietary Blend Before You Buy
A quick checklist for a labeling pattern that hides more than it reveals.
Scan enough male vitality labels and a pattern shows up: an impressive list of eight or ten ingredient names, followed by one combined weight covering all of them. Here's why that structure deserves a second look.
What a proprietary blend actually hides
When a label lists ingredients under one combined weight — "Men's Blend: 500mg" followed by eight names — there's no way to know how that 500mg splits. It's entirely possible for one ingredient to make up 490mg and the rest to be present in amounts too small to matter, sometimes called "fairy dusting."
Why this matters more for some ingredients
Some botanicals have research suggesting a meaningful dose range; below that, there's little reason to expect an effect. Tongkat Ali is a good example — research suggesting benefit generally uses doses in the hundreds-of-milligrams dry-equivalent range. Without individual disclosure, you can't verify whether you're getting a meaningful dose or a token one.
What a transparent label looks like
Compare that to a label listing each ingredient with its own amount — the structure used throughout our ingredient breakdown. It takes more label space and looks less flashy, but it's the only structure that lets you actually verify what you're getting.
A quick checklist
- Does each ingredient have its own listed amount, or are several grouped together?
- For concentrated extracts, is the ratio or dry equivalent stated?
- Does the total of individually-listed ingredients seem reasonable for the capsule size?
None of this guarantees a product works — but a transparent label is the minimum standard worth expecting before spending money in this category.
